HOLD III Ada 95

Ada 95 demonstrator for safety-critical applications

Farnborough UK -- November 1996 -- With funding from the UK Ministry of Defence, and Lucas Aerospace (part of Lucas Varity, NYSE: LVA), the High Order Language Demonstration (HOLD) program installed the first Ada 95 compiler targeted to the Motorola M68000 family.

The compiler is specially configured to enforce the safety-related restrictions specified in Annex H of the Ada language specification, and is based on the GCC Compiler from the Free Software Foundation, and the Ada 95 front end from New York University.

The application domain for HOLD III is aerospace systems where safety targets are only met if the software is correct. One example is the Full Authority Digital Engine Controller used on Rolls Royce RB199 engine and fitted on Royal Air Force Tornado aircraft.
